Australian scientists flag advance in quantum computing

Sydney - The advent of a super-computer more powerful than all currently existing computers harnessed together came a step closer with the creation in Sydney of a single-atom processor set in a standard silicon chip, scientists said Thursday.

The scientists said their quantum bit would bring forward by years the commercial application of quantum computing because it married traditional wafer fabrication methods with a single-atom quantum bit- the elementary unit of a quantum computer.

"What we've done is combine atomic-scale quantum physics with a very traditional, almost standard, silicon transistor," the University of New South Wales' Andrea Morello said Thursday. "The way we do it is exactly how Intel does it." Morello said former colleagues laughed five years ago when he joined the Sydney team trying to make a quantum silicon chip.

"They said, 'Are you crazy! That stuff is too hard. It's never going to work.' And now, I can look at them and say 'I did it.'" Other teams around the world have used single atoms held in place using lasers in a vacuum to make quantum simulators that go beyond the critical threshold at which today's most advanced computers choke.

The Sydney team, led by Andrew Dzurak, has gone one better by reaching that threshold with standard materials.

"This is the breakthrough," Morello said. "If you're looking at single atoms in silicon you are looking basically just at our group. Bits in silicon is the way to go." Quantum computing would allow computations far beyond the capabilities of today's supercomputers.//DPA
