The tiny Central Plains province of Sing Buri has great potential for cultural tourism. Among the highlights of a visit there at this time of year are the lively boat races held at Wat Klang Tha Kham in Khai Bang Rachan district.

Dating back more than a century, this annual event takes place during the kathin period, from the middle of the 11th lunar month in the traditional calendar to the middle of the 12th lunar month, when new robes and other necessities are presented to monks at Buddhist temples around the country.
This year's race will take place over the October 13-14 weekend, with boats competing in three different size categories. The winning teams will receive trophies from HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

Discounted airfares
To welcome the arrival of its first A380 aircraft, Thai Airways International is hosting the Smooth as Silk Special Fair at which tickets for international flights and package tours by THAI will be on sale at discounted prices. The fair opens today in the Lifestyle Hall at Siam Paragon (second floor) and continues until September 30.
Here are some of the deals on return flights (economy class):
Bangkok-Hong Kong (Oct 6-Dec 14): 9,200 baht.
Bangkok-Singapore (Oct 6-Dec 14): 9,015 baht.
Bangkok-Frankfurt (Dec 15 to March 31, 2013): 35,650 baht.
Bangkok-Narita (Jan 16-March 31, 2013): 16,930 baht.
On several international routes, special prices on return flights in both business and economy classes are available for those travelling between Oct 1 and March 31 next year. Some examples are:

New air link to Nanning
From Dec 11, low-cost carrier AirAsia will be operating three flights a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) from Kuala Lumpur to Nanning, capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. This is its 22nd route to China.
Located about 160km from the border with Vietnam, Nanning has a population of about 6.7 million and is famous for its abundance of greenery.
Sites of scenic interest in the vicinity include the Qingxiu mountain range, a series of 18 peaks. Rock carvings can be seen there on Jieqing Cliff.
The city itself is a shopping destination and the local cuisine is also well worth checking out; outstanding dishes include "old friend" noodles, Nanning lemon duck and Bazhen rice noodles.
