Chiang Mai – a Renaissance?

Chiang Mai, the capital of northern Thailand; an atmospheric, attractive, historic destination—yet a city which, somehow, over the last few years, has seemed to lose its way, lose its lustre, been relegated to an 'also-ran' visitor destination behind Phuket, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Samui.


The reasons 'why' are not totally clear, but in the middle of 2012, all signs are that the city is on the cusp of a renaissance. The decline in tourism figures since the last peak in 2006 has been staunched, and total arrivals in 2011 of over 5 million showed more than a satisfactory increase (some 16 percent) over the previous year; 2012 is expected to see a continuance of such growth.
