BANGKOK, 20 August 2012 – The National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) has voiced support for the government's crop pledging scheme, citing its benefit to help raise produce prices.

NESDB Secretary-General Arkhom Termpitayapaisit said the crop pledging scheme, especially for rice, was another way to increase income for farmers. However, he suggested that, to prevent losses from its fixed purchasing price policy, the government must choose a suitable time to sell the rice in its warehouse. At the same time, he warned that if the rice was sold higher than the country's competitors, more rice would be left in stock, resulting in lower quality and price.

Mr Arkhom said if it was not the right time to sell, the government should instead keep the rice for the time being and try to distribute it fast when possible. He also stressed that Thai rice should not be sold in competition with lower-grade types in the market so as to avoid price drop.
