Musical gift for the elderly

As we approach the end of the year, the traditional season for an outpouring of compassion and good cheer, a group of budding pianists, between the ages of five and 19, are getting together to put on a concert to raise funds for a very good cause.

Young piano students will give a concert at the Thailand Cultural Centre on Monday to raise funds for a home for senior citizens.

The youngsters _ all of whom are students of talented local pianists Indhuon Srikaranonda and Artas Balakauskas _ will stage a performance on Monday in the Thailand Cultural Centre's small auditorium.

All proceeds will go to the Camillian Social Centre in Prachin Buri province which takes care of nearly 100 elderly people, many of whom are sick or unable to fend for themselves.

Apart from piano music, concert-goers will also be treated to a performance by a string ensemble, conducted by Apichai Leamthong.

The ensemble consists of six students, all aged 11.

"Our charity concert is an annual event that allows the students to share their musical talents with the public and to use their music for a good cause," Indhuon explained.

The programme for this year's concert include some of the students' favourite pieces: Chopin's Waltz in A-flat major (Opus 42), Polonaise in D minor, Scherzo No.1 (Opus 71) and Polonaise in A-flat major (Opus 53); Debussy's Prelude to the Bergamasque Suite; and Mendelssohn's Andante cantabile and presto agitato.

Indhuon and Artas will also take part, performing two pieces together: Brahms' Hungarian Dance No.8 in A minor for piano four hands and Dvorak's Slavonic Dance No.15 in C major for piano four hands (Opus 72). Among the young pianists are Pirapat Tokiatrungruang and Titteetat Wongbunkiat who recently received bronze medals at the 5th Asean International Chopin Piano Competition in Malaysia (no gold or silver medals were awarded on that occasion).

The concert starts at 5pm. Tickets cost 300 baht and include complimentary beverages and snacks. For more information, call 081-482-8286.
