Thailand, Maldives sign trade deal

Thailand and the Maldives have signed an agreement to promote trade.


The deal was signed on Saturday by Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyapirom and his counterpart Ahmed Mohamed, during a two-day state visit to the island nation. The Thai delegation is being led by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the trip is the first by a Thai leader in 34 years.


Trade between Thailand and the Maldives last year was more than US$109 million (3.31 billion baht), up 0.4% from 2011. Thailand's exports totalled $73 million and its imports $36.16 million.
