Company expects to gain market share by promoting it with Windows 8

The Windows Phone 8 is built to work seamlessly with Windows 8 PCs and the Xbox 360. It is the latest initiative from Microsoft to gain more share in the smart-phone market. Not only Microsoft, but also its stakeholders - including smart-phone manufacturers and software developers - are welcoming and putting efforts to support Microsoft's foray into the smart-phone market.

Manop Maneechawakajone, leader of the Consumer Channel Group at Microsoft (Thailand), said that as a part of the Windows 8 platform, Microsoft is promoting Windows Phone 8 together with Windows 8. With the same look and feel, the same technology core and cloud service, Windows Phone 8 is built to work seamlessly with Windows 8.

He added that Microsoft has been working closely with and supporting its phone OEM partners such as Nokia and HTC, as well mobile operator partners to educate and promote Windows Phone in Thailand.

To encourage Thai developers to develop software and applications for running on Windows Phone platform, he said Microsoft's Developer and Platform Evangelism (DPE) team is working closely with the Nokia DX team to build local applications and the ecosystem. They provide training, design resources, phones and remote access, code, professional and community support. They also hold a few joint developer events together.

On November 24, Microsoft and Nokia will jointly organise an event called "App Fest". The event is aimed at students and developers to update Windows Phone 8 technology and compete with new apps designs. More details on http://micthailand.net/NokiaWindowsPhoneAppFestRegistration.aspx

In addition, he added that Microsoft would host several events to further spur app development in Thailand. For example, it recently hosted "WOWZAPP 2012", the worldwide hackathon designed to inspire even more people to develop Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 apps.

"And together with ThumbsUp we recently held the 'Start it Up Power it Up' event. We talked about the opportunities for start-ups - such as Windows Phone 8 developers - to use the cloud and get ready for the Asean Economic Community in 20150," said Manop.

"The smart-phone market is growing fast, and there is a strong appetite for a new approach and a third ecosystem. Windows Phone has that innovation - it's the only phone with Live Tiles, designed to keep users closer to the people and things that matter most," he said.

"With Windows Phone 8, we believe we have the right product at the right time. We have reinvented Windows Phone 8 … an approach that is different from anything in the market today. Along with a great product, we have strong support of our hardware and carrier partners. Also, we are investing to build the Windows Phone brand and take a more direct approach with consumers," said Manop.

Meanwhile, Jirapat Janjerdsak, head of Developer Experience at Nokia (Thailand), said the company is working closely with its partners, operators and developers to promote Nokia Windows Phone in Thailand. A major marketing campaign will be launched with the aim of introducing new platform and new innovations, which new Nokia Lumia offers.

The marketing campaign idea is "Love @ first touch". It will invite consumers to try the new device. The activities include Lumia Test Drive: consumers can loan a Nokia Lumia 920 for three days two nights for free; Lumia Troop will go around various CBD areas, including Siam Square, Silom, Asoke, La Villa Aree, Ratchadaphisek Road, Asiatique and Crystal Park; and Lumia Centre will go on a tour to introduce the new device nationwide.

Most importantly, at more than 1,000 retail outlets, there will be a live unit for consumers to try and learn more about the Nokia Lumia 920.

To encourage Thai developers to develop software and applications for running on Nokia Windows Phone platform, Jirapat said that Nokia Thailand is working closely with local partners, including Microsoft, operators, and brand partners to ensure relevancy of applications.

"We also provide training, consulting and phone loan. We offer monetisation tools, including promoting of the apps through Nokia channels. We encourage our partners to ride on the multiscreen trends by convincing PC and tablet developers to develop phone apps," said Jirapat.

Currently, there are six models of Nokia Lumia in the Thai market - 900, 800, 710, 610, and the newly launched 920 and 820. Jirapat said Nokia wants to be the leader in the smart-phone market with new innovations on an outstanding platform and strong ecosystem.

Microsoft's Windows Phone 8, the latest version of the company's smart phone operating system, made its debut at the end of last month. Microsoft is reportedly spending US$1 billion on marketing Windows 8, which is expected to have knock-on benefits, generating greater interest in Windows Phone 8.

However, Ovum analyst Nick Dillon, said that in terms of sales, Ovum forecasts Windows Phone to grow from 4.5 per cent of smart-phone market share in 2012 to 13 per cent in 2017, putting it in third place behind iOS and Android."

Windows Phone 8 offers a range of new features including "Live Apps" that brings information right to the start screen; "Top Apps" - currently, Windows Phone Store has 120,000 apps; "Kid's Corner" (exclusive to Windows Phone 8) - parents can activate a special place on the phone for kids to play, complete with their own customisable Start screens, where they can access only the apps, games, music and videos picked by parents; and " Rooms" - allowing users to share and chat with one group's entire social network.
