Korphai music ensemble is set to dazzle fans this evening with a performance of rare quality at Chulalongkorn University's Art and Culture Centre starting 6pm.
Korphai ensemble, led by noted ethnomusicologist Anant Narkkong of Silpakorn University, second left, performs this evening at Chulalongkorn University's Art and Culture Centre.
Featuring traditional and contemporary pieces, the performance incorporates musical instruments from neighbouring countries, like the pattala xylophone native to Myanmar, and traditional Thai percussion equipment.
Playing it will be Taweesak Akkrawong, the top ranad exponent of our time.
The programme kicks off with the overture Chomsurang, followed by a set of suits in Khmer, Tab Khom Dam Din and Mae Sri Song Khrueng or Tab Nok. The latter, a musical gem composed by the late Prince Naris for a scene from Javanese literature, Inao, is spectacular for "dialogue" mimicking bird sounds with musicians performing on various types of bamboo flute.
Contemporary pieces include Raak Phaendin, the title song from TV series Homrong, arranged by Chaibhuk Bhatrachinda, and Duang Jampa, a music-for-life piece which is an adaptation of Laos' national anthem.
The programme concludes with lively Yoki Tawaifai, a funeral song in Mon dialect.
