Hi Drew,
Was hoping you could help me with some info?
I have a one year old daughter in Pattaya who lives with her
mother, we are a couple and the baby has my family name, and has a British
passport. I am the sole provider for all that's needed, as in rent and anything
else that's required.
My question is, what rights do I have as a father? As her mother
often threatens me about taking my daughter away from me, which worries me a
lot as I only know the name of her village.
I will be returning to Pattaya from London in 6 weeks so
would like to come see you about some solutions to any problems I might come
across?
Any info would be very grateful as I really have no idea on
my rights outside the UK?
Many thanks
Dylan
Dear Dylan,
Father's right is a very hot topic in Pattaya as so many of
us have children with Thai ladies. First, I want to say "Bravo" to
you for being a responsible father.
As far as your legal rights go, provided your name is on the
child's birth certificate as I assume it is since she has your family name, you
have all the rights a Thai man has to parent your own daughter.
On another note, it is a bad sign that the mother would
threaten you in such a horrible way. We can get her address from her Thai
National ID card or House Book and secure your claim to your daughter with the
head of her village. When you come to see me at our new office - just 5 doors
down from our Thepprasit Road Soi 3 office of 14 years - I will explain the
details.
In the mean time, do not worry. They are not going anywhere
and if they do we can find them. In most cases as long as the money is coming
in on a regular basis the threat is veiled.
Cheers,
Drew
