When zero means so much

Filipino artist Poklong Anading started his latest exhibition from zero. He took the Thai word for zero, soon, and used it in his work while undertaking Bangkok University Gallery's Asian Artist in Residency Programme.

Soon (Every water is an island) will be on show at Bangkok University Gallery from Feb 21 to April 5.The opening reception is on Feb 28 at 6pm, preceded by an artist talk from3pmto 4.30pm. The gallery is located at Bangkok University's Kluai NamThai campus onRamaIV Road and opens Tuesday to Saturday from10amto 7pm. Call 02-350-3626.

The result is the exhibition of installation art called "Soon (Every water is an island)", which opens at the gallery on Feb 21.

Anading's project started from soon, but he did not take it to represent the number zero or "void", another of the word's meanings. Instead, for Anading soon explains a new beginning, an opening of the mind and a willingness to encounter new experiences. The artworks that will be on show will be in a variety of media, as Anading is always experimental in his use of materials to present his ideas. He started his artistic career with painting and photography before turning his hand to video, sculpture, using found objects and developing installation art.

Most of his recent works are created using overlooked or discarded objects that can be found in daily life. The practice is in line with the Arte Povera movement of the 1960s.

Anading earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the College of Fine Arts, University of the Philippines. His works have been shown in the Philippines, China, the US, Australia, South Korea, Austria and Thailand.
