Power consumption reached a new record high on Thursday, at 26,430 megawatts, as temperature hit 39.1 degree celcius, according to Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.

Last year's record was registered on 26 April at 26,121MW, when the temperature hit 38.5 degree celcius.

EGAT Governor Sutat Patamasiriwat said that as temperature is set to rise, this year's power consumption could peak at 27,000MW.

He urged all Thais to use energy-saving equipment and maintain the efficiency of their electrical appliances.

The energy authorities have urged all parties in Thailand to join the energy-saving campaign this year, to cope with lower natural gas for electricity generating as well as higher temperature. It is expected that the power consumption will peak on April 5. The operator of Yadana gas field in Myanmar earlier agreed to postpone the maintenance shutdown to April 6, to help Thailand avoid power brownout or even power blackout.

Bank of Thailand today issued a statement, assuring all that Thai banks are prepared for unexpected problems during the period. The auxiliary power system is now in place, as well as the contingency plan, to ensure uninterrupted banking services.
