BANGKOK, 1 February 2013 (NNT) â" The countryâs hotel business operators are hopeful that more tourists will go on vacation and room occupancy will expand impressively this year.
Thai Hotel Association (THA) President Surapong Techaruvichit said on Thursday that, in 2012, the countryâs tourism industry appeared promising, with foreign tourist arrivals at more than 22 million, or a 15% year-on-year increase.
Mr. Surapong stated that 2 countries with traveler numbers of more than 2 million in the past year were China and Malaysia. At the same time, 3 countries with more than a million holidaymakers landed in Thailand were Japan, Russia, India and South Korea.
In terms of spending, the THA President said that Chinese travelers were the biggest spenders of more than 104.5 billion baht, followed by Russian and Austrian holidaymakers with 82.4 and 62.7 billion baht from their pockets, respectively.
In short, the Thai tourism industry has earned over 960 billion baht from overseas holidaymakers.
With impressive records in 2012, Mr. Surapong is hopeful that the hotel occupancy in 2013 will further expand by at least 5% more than in 2012, when the occupancy rate stood at 64.9%.
Meanwhile, Vice President of Thai Airways International Chalongchai Hiranyalekha predicts that around 67 million travelers will arrive or depart from Suvarnabhumi and Donmueang airports this year.
